I like to dump on Facebook as much as the next guy, but I have to say, on a day-to-day basis, social networking has helped me integrate into expat life as much as the blogs.
My advice to any newbies is to shamelessly “friend” anyone you meet here, and plug into subscriptions (this used to be “likes”) offered by businesses, especially art galleries, guest houses and restaurants. Yucatan Today and Yucatan Living have news and promos.
Yes, I do like to know the dessert special at Rescoldos even if I’m up north, Mexico International will post new listings.
There is also an open group called Mexico Amigos!, started by a fairly prominent expat, and it serves as a nice bulletin board of queries and advice.
Finding Twitter feeds in English is harder, but the mayor, the police and most papers tweet.
Most of what I gather is arcane, but who cares … These trivial little dispatches are like little Milagros to me.
